Essential Info for Chartering in the BVI
Catamarans are ideal for the BVI’s shallow water
When it comes to yacht types in the BVI, we usually recommend catamarans and motor yachts. This is primarily due to the region’s shallow waters, greatly limiting accessibility for deep-drafted yachts.

BVI’s Charter Season and Early Booking
The main charter season in the BVI spans from December to March, with a peak around Christmas/New Year. Notice the interesting months of April and November, which offer discounted deals in the British Virgin Islands.
Make sure to book your Bahamas yacht charter well in advance. Ideally, you would inquire about your coming charter 12 months in advance. WHY? The best charter yachts are often fully booked long in advance and it’s not unusual to see popular dates booked 2 summers ahead for a BVI yacht charter. Inquiring less than 6 months ahead often means that your first choice is unavailable for charter.
More affordable with NO VAT or Sales Tax!
VAT might not at first seem like a big deal, but when you’re hit with a hefty bill from a destination with high VAT, it’s a different story. Many popular charter destinations around the world have introduced VAT, with places like Greece charging a whole 24% and the Bahamas charging 10%. This tax can significantly inflate your overall expenses and draw from a budget you could otherwise have used on more luxury, fun activities, or an extended charter.
With no VAT, BVI is a smart choice for those looking to save or splurge on more luxurious experiences during their charter. Besides, BVI is a shopper’s paradise, offering a variety of local artwork, jewelry, and precious- and gemstones —without the added tax burden. Enjoy your guilt-free shopping spree!
WHERE TO GO IN THE BVI
Norman Island
Norman Island Caves invites yacht charterers to explore a captivating blend of geological marvels and maritime legends in the British Virgin Islands. These coastal caves, etched by the relentless forces of wind and water, unveil a mesmerizing world of grottoes and chambers. The interplay of light and shadows within adds an enchanting aura to the surroundings.
While there isn’t a particular bay associated with the caves, boats and yacht charters often anchor in nearby bays such as The Bight or Privateer Bay before exploring the caves using dinghies or small boats. Accessing the caves from these anchorages allows for a convenient and scenic journey along the southern shore of Norman Island.
Tortola
Tortola is the largest island in the British Virgin Islands. It’s home to some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean- especially in Cane Garden Bay. Tortola Island also has many historical sites and points of interest. Don’t miss a visit to Smuggler’s Cove, a perfect shallow reef ideal for scuba beginners and untouched by civilization.
To get a taste of authentic Caribbean living from your BVI charter vacation, venture into Torrola’s Road Town. The freedom of your own private yacht lets you explore the colorful streets and enjoy laid-back evenings tasting rum-infused cocktails from the beach bars. A visit to the Callwood Rum Distillery is a must, as is a stroll around the Craft’s Alive Village for souvenir shopping.
The Indians
The Indians is a natural wonder and a must-visit destination for anyone on a yacht charters, offering a blend of natural beauty and snorkeling opportunities. This cluster of rugged islets features striking rock formations shaped by the elements. The main attraction is the submerged boulders, known as “The Caves,” providing a captivating underwater landscape.
Accessible by yacht, anchoring in the vicinity opens the door to an immersive experience. Snorkelers can explore vibrant coral reefs and encounter diverse marine life thriving in the crystal-clear waters.
Virgin Gorda
Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the British Virgin Islands. It’s known for its beautiful white sands, the rock pools known as The Baths, and world-class luxury resorts and clubs for BVI yacht charters. There are also some great hiking trails on Virgin Gorda with sweeping views of the island’s coastline-making it an ideal destination for visitors with bareboat catamarans.
After soaking up the sunshine and saltwater activities in Virgin Gorda, consider visiting the Copper Mine National Park. These 19th-century abandoned ruins are found between Copper Mine Bay and Crooks Bay on the island’s southeastern point. The structures were built by Cornish miners and housed around 130 families before the mine was closed in 1862.
Sandy Spit
Sandy Spit is a tiny island in the British Virgin Islands, located east of Jost Van Dyke Island. This tiny desert island is perfect for a charter adventure featuring powdery white sands surrounded by clear turquoise waters, offering a picture-perfect setting for relaxation and exploration.
One of the highlights of Sandy Spit is its accessibility by catamaran. With its shallow waters and sandy bottom, you can anchor your catamaran remarkably close to the shore, allowing you to almost step directly onto the island from your vessel. This island is ideal for lounging on the beach, snorkeling along the vibrant coral reefs, or simply soaking in the tranquility of this secluded paradise.
Anegada Island
This tiny island is arguably one of the most pristine places in the world, and it makes sense why it has become synonymous with white sand beaches. Loblolly Beach, Bay Beach, and Cow Wreck Beach are not to be missed in BVI yacht charters.
Anegada Sea is also home to the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean. You’ll find turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, and even manta rays!
Flamingo Pond, on Anegada Island, is absolutely a must-visit for anyone visiting the BVI. The shallow salt pond, surrounded by mangroves, hosts a significant population of Caribbean flamingos. These iconic birds, with their vibrant pink plumage and long legs, are drawn to the saline-rich waters of the pond.
